ACI Gr. 1 Field Testing Technician

A Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I is an individual who has demonstrated the knowledge and ability to properly perform and record the results of seven basic field tests on freshly mixed concrete.

ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who meet both of the following requirements:

1) A passing grade on the ACI written examination; and

The one-hour written examination is "closed book" and consists of 55 multiple choice questions. There are five (5) to ten (10) questions on each of the ASTM Standards. To pass the written examination, both of the following conditions must be met: (a) at least 60% correct for each of the required standards; and (b) a minimum score of 70% overall.

The performance examination is also "closed book" and requires actual demonstration of six of the required ASTM Standards plus a verbal description of Sampling, ASTM C 172. The examinee is judged on his/her ability to correctly perform or describe all of the required procedures for each standard.

Recertification is necessary every five (5) years, and requires successful completion of both the written and performance examinations.

ACI Flatwork

A Concrete Flatwork Finisher/Technician is a craftsman who has demonstrated the ability to place, consolidate, finish, edge, joint, cure and protect concrete flatwork. A Concrete Flatwork Technician is a person who is knowledgeable about proper procedures to place, consolidate, finish, edge, joint, cure and protect concrete flatwork, but who lacks sufficient work experience to qualify as a concrete flatwork finisher.

The primary technical resource for this program is ACI's Concrete Craftsman Series, Slabs on Grade, CCS-1.

Other supplemental technical resource materials used in these programs include the following:

Concrete Primer, SP-1, American Concrete Institute

Guide to Finishing and Related Problems, Concrete Construction Publications

The programs require knowledge in the following areas of concrete construction:

  • Basic concrete technology
  • Concrete materials and mix proportioning
  • Concrete control tests
  • Proper use of finishing tools
  • Placing, consolidation, and finishing
  • Edging, jointing, curing, and protection

The program requires a working knowledge of the following ASTM Standards:

    • C 617 - Capping Cylindrical Concrete Specimens
    • C 1231 - Unbonded Caps for Concrete Cylinders
    • C 39 - Compressive Strength of Cylindrical Concrete Specimens
    • C 78 - Flexural Strength of concrete

    ACI Special Inspector

A Concrete Construction Special Inspector is a person qualified to inspect and record the results of concrete construction inspection based on codes and job specifications. The program covers inspection during preplacement, placement, and post-placement operations.

An Associate Concrete Construction Special Inspector is a person who is knowledgeable about inspection procedures for concrete construction, including preplacement, placement, and post-placement operations; but does not have the experience required to qualify as an ACI Concrete Construction Special Inspector.

The programs require a knowledge of concrete construction, including plans reading, formwork installation and removal, reinforcements, embedments, sampling and testing freshly mixed concrete, conveying, placing, consolidation, finishing, jointing curing, and protection.

The technical resource materials used in these programs include the following:

    NRMCA Pervious Certification

The NRMCA Pervious Concrete Contractor Certification is modeled after ACI ‘s Flatwork Finisher Certification. The program is designed to be administered locally by local sponsoring groups in conjunction with planned training sessions or demonstrations of pervious concrete placement.

    Two levels are possible:

Pervious Concrete Technician, which requires passing a written exam. A Pervious Concrete Technician is a person who is knowledgeable about proper procedures to place, consolidate, finish, edge, joint, cure and protect pervious concrete pavements, but who lacks sufficient work experience to qualify as a concrete craftsman.

Pervious Concrete Craftsman, which requires passing the same exam plus some level of work experience and/or passing a performance exam component. A prerequisite is the ACI Flatwork Finisher certification which ensures that the craftsman knows the basic level of care needed for flatwork construction.
Pervious Concrete Craftsman is more knowledgeable because he/she not only meets the Technician requirements but also has earned ACI Flatwork Finisher Certification and, through documented work experience, can demonstrated the ability to place, consolidate, finish, edge, joint, cure and protect pervious concrete pavements.
